“Wouldn’t it be nice to get on with the neighbours?”…these words from a 1960s pop song, made me think about bus shelters. Why? As I was walking down St Leonard’s Place and looking at the conversion of the old council offices into high priced luxury houses and apartments it was raining and my thoughts went along these lines. Wouldn’t it be nice if the developers Rushbond Ltd., as well as converting the former council offices into luxury homes and apartments (a good thing in itself for York) would consider the ordinary man and woman standing in the rain outside the elegant houses waiting for buses with no shelters or seats? For a relatively small cost the developers could “get on with the neighbours”.

Last Friday I walked along St Leonard’s Place just as the rain stopped, and I asked people waiting for the No 4 and 5 buses if they thought there should be some bus shelters provided. Everyone said yes, apart from one foreign tourist who didn’t want to say either way.

Added to this is the situation outside the Theatre Royal. Previously people could shelter under the arches when it was raining, but with the new building work this has gone, and when the work is complete I imagine there will be no arches at all.
