SATURDAY was Yorkshire day and with the county so firmly in our minds, it was rather fitting that Sunday was devoted to a Yorkshire heroine.

Jane Tomlinson was one of those people whose story humbles us. Despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer she doggedly raised more than £1.8 million through a series of challenges, including long-distance bike rides, marathons, triathlons and a full Ironman race.

The runners at yesterday's York 10k knew that. All were inspired to sign up by Jane's selfless actions and the charity in her name will grow substantially thanks to their equally selfless efforts.

After Jane's death a fundraising target of £5million was set. It is already way past that and as the Knavesmire crowd roared on competitors for the last 200 metres, just as spectators did all over the city, it didn't really matter who finished where, because the real winners were local charities. Just as they have been since 2009.

Jane Tomlinson's legacy is an inspiration to all. We salute everyone who took part in yet another successful York 10k. Long may they continue.
