WHAT a lovely surprise to see the photograph of the children and teachers of the Bar Convent Preparatory School, 1948 (The Press, July 6).

I started school at the Bar Convent in September 1948. I was just five, so this picture was taken during my first term.

I am sitting in the front row, right hand side group, first on the left, directly in front of the teacher wearing the light cardigan. I think her name was Miss Murphy, but I may be wrong. Our teacher was Sister Fidelis. My name then was Angela Granger.

I was only at the Bar Convent for just over two years, because my family moved to Southern Ireland, but I do remember a couple of girls from those early days.

The girl sitting next-but-one to me with the dark curly hair is Susan Pugh, and somewhere on the back row is Barbara Hurrigan, who was a few years older than I, and sometimes used to take me to school on the bus. We lived in Fulford, York.

For years, we had an original framed copy of this photograph, but unfortunately it was damaged during a house move and damp got behind the glass and it was completely ruined, so it was a real pleasure to see it again, bringing back long-ago happy memories.
