LEWIS HAMILTON may be quick behind the wheel on a racetrack, but obviously not very quick on the rules of etiquette as he was refused entry to the Wimbledon Royal Box for the men’s final.

His outfit may have been adequate for a West End nightclub, but the Royal Box, no way.

Our British sporting institutions, certain restaurants, military messes and some clubs historically have had dress codes for years.

There is nothing nicer than dressing for the occasion.

Wimbledon quite rightly insists on predominantly white for its players, as it is for most cricket matches.

I personally think a cricket team in all blue looks awful.

Golf clubs have dress codes and they should be rigidly stuck to.

If an individual cannot be bothered to turn out correctly, he should be refused immediately and directed to a municipal course where the rules are more relaxed.

York Racecourse has a dress code for its members’ County Stand and members’ bar.

York Theatre Royal has no dress codes for its dress circle, so why continue calling it a dress circle when one could turn up in jeans and t-shirt?

Keep up the standards Britain, a unique part of our way of life.
