YORK was invaded by a 'pink army' at the weekend.

There was nothing remotely sinister about the thousands of women who converged on the Knavesmire, however.

This was the annual Race for Life. And it was all about remembering lost friends, celebrating life - and, of course, raising money for research into cancer.

The event has become one of the biggest, most popular fundraisers in York's calendar.

All the women taking part - whether in the 5k, 10k or 'pretty muddy' events - had their own reasons for doing so.

Some had lost friends or loved ones to cancer. Others had been inspired by a tale of courage or heartbreak. Still more got involved simply because they wanted to experience the unique atmosphere of solidarity and togetherness that makes this event so special.

This year's event is expected to have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds. That is money that could make a real difference in the on-going search for new cures and treatments.

The event is called the Race for Life. But it isn't about winners - and it certainly isn't about losers. It is about coming together in a shared determination to beat cancer.

Judging by pluck, spirit and determination shown by the thousands of women who took part over the weekend, one day we just might manage that...
