I AM writing to say what an honour and privilege it was to attend Iby Knill’s talk at St Peter’s School as part of the Festival of Ideas.

What a truly inspirational lady she is, to wait 60 years to tell her story and to still be travelling around telling her accounts of being a survivor of the Holocaust aged 91.

She puts a lot of younger people to shame.

Let’s hope that all 400 of us in attendance that night learned a bit about compassion and humility towards our fellow men as a result of Iby’s talk.

Also, many thanks to everyone involved in the Festival of Ideas, which truly has something for everyone this year.

How often in life do you get to attend events you would happily pay for free of charge?

IN January this year, my father, a dearly-loved member of our family and a truly lovely man, needed to go into a care home.

Because of adverse publicity surrounding such homes, we were extremely worried.

However, after six months of almost daily visiting at different times of the day and sometimes late into the night, we saw nothing but loving care and exceptional kindness from the nurses, health care workers, and all the staff.

Now our loved one has passed on and we can never thank the staff of South Park Care Home in Acomb enough.

HOLIDAYING is such a joyous pleasure but the behaviour of many British tourists abroad is so heinous and unfair.

I hate reading news reports such as the one about a group of friends partying on top of a revered mountain in Malaysia and using it as a public toilet.

Are manners not taught in schools any more?

I think our nation has a lot to be ashamed of.

HOLIDAYS are approaching and many people will be preparing to get away from it all either in this country or by travelling abroad.

Going on holiday for people with diabetes is not quite so straight forward and requires more planning, especially for those treated with insulin.

The security at airports and on flights means that carrying injection devices and insulin on planes requires arrangements to be made.

The InDependent Diabetes Trust (IDDT) provides a holiday information pack with tips on looking after diabetes in hot weather, foot care while on holiday, carrying tablets and insulin to other countries and holiday insurance.

We are happy send this free holiday pack if people contact IDDT on 01604 622837, email enquiries@ iddtinternational.org or write to IDDT, PO Box 294, Northampton NN1 4XS.

I AM hoping to get local residents and daily users to back me on my proposal that Heslington Lane is fully double yellow lined immediately.

I know that this is in the pipeline but we have waited long enough, and my fear is that either a child or a cyclist will be hurt while we wait – and I do know that the police could put down no waiting cones while the full job is done.

The problems that are caused by university staff and students parking there is horrendous and it surely must not be long before there is an accident along that stretch of road.

The university charge their staff and students for parking, which I feel is unfair and unjust.

They should offer this service free.

They have an enormous amount of land now that could be utilised for parking space, if needed.

If they trot out the old “we want people to use cycles or public transport” then they need to wake up and smell the roses as it is obvious from the parking mayhem that people are not.

THE next meeting of the York Haematology Support Group for patients, carers, families and friends dealing with blood cancers, will take place on Thursday, July 2, at 7pm at Huntington Working Men’s Club.

The guest speaker will be Denise Wishart, benefits advisor.

We are a friendly informal group and newcomers are welcome, just turn up on the night. Ample free parking.

We will not be meeting in August, as it’s our summer break.
