FINALISING the Local Plan for York has to be a top priority for the city.

The last Labour administration had made good progress in piecing together a blueprint for the future development of York - but failed to get it through before the city council election.

Now a group of housebuilders have launched a campaign to get things back on track.

The Love York Let's Plan campaign is non-political but is urging City of York Council to finalise its Local Plan and boost the local economy.

It argues that a Local Plan is needed to not only ensure more homes are built in the city, but that land is set aside for employment use.

By their estimates, the city can benefit hugely by formulating the Local Plan. Not only could 850 homes be built each year, but some 15,000 new jobs could come to the city too.

Businesses could count the dividends as well through an estimated £150 million in extra spending by residents while council coffers would be strengthened by an extra £5 million in business rates, £18 million in council tax and a £110 million New Homes Bonus from the Government.

The Local Plan will also set down in stone how the city intends to meet other challenges, including improving roads and transport links, securing new schools, and meeting healthcare demands as well as protecting the green belt.

York is a great city, and we need to make sure it stays that way.

Agreeing on a Local Plan is a key step in that direction.
