MUCH has been written about the Easingwold Farmers’ market not being satisfied with the current arrangements at Shambles Market in York, and one must sympathise. But don’t forget the regular stallholders who also do not seem to be happy with the changes.

Like them I wonder just where the money has been spent. There does not seem to be any increased footfall from previously either in Newgate Market or Parliament Street and no noticeable increase since the “improvements” were carried out.

While some of the paving has been improved there does not seem to have been anything done to make the cobbled area more level and easier for people with walking difficulties, in wheelchairs or wheeled walkers getting to the stalls.

It has been said that the St Nicholas Fair organisers would not come to York if they had to go into the Shambles area. This must tell you something of what is thought of that area as a sales location.

Regular stall holders who are there for 50 weeks in the year should have far more consideration than others who only appear for two weeks.

On the radio recently, one of the national speakers said that the most successful markets were in town’s High Streets. Why not York in Parliament Street?
