P WITLEA writes that because something is free, people will take it even if they don’t need it (Letters, May 2).
Food banks are used by people who really need them – it’s not something to be proud of and checks are usually made. As I understand it, you can’t just walk in off the street and ask for food.
While you are there I was told you are offered debt counselling to help you make savings.
Food bands offer a vital service in the community. What is the true number of people really needing them? Possibly a lot higher than figures show because some would be ashamed admitting they needed them and so won’t use them.
How many lives have this vital service saved?
