FOLLOWING on from Roger Marshall’s excellent letter to The Press of April 18, I would like to commend his suggestion of some lasting tribute to be placed at the new community stadium.

However, a brass plaque or even the naming of a stand to honour Steve Beck’s huge contribution to saving York City from extinction would not be big enough.

Many of football’s largest clubs have honoured past players, by having a bronze figure erected – including Billy Bremner at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.

A bronze figure of Steve Beck possibly as seen in the photograph accompanying Roger Marshall’s article, would be a fine tribute to a very big man.

May I suggest that York City Supporters Club launch a fundraising appeal to pay for such a statue, to which I will be pleased to donate a three figure sum to start the fund. I am sure many hundreds of supporters would be pleased to do the same.

How good it would be at the opening of the new stadium, to see the unveiling of such a statue, of the saviour of the club.
