NETWORK Rail and police have been working at crossings to help prevent accidents. But these are not accidents, they incidents are caused by stupidity, by people jumping the lights going over barriers.

The people who do this are putting their lives at risk and those of others as well.

We should introduce proper sentences for law-breakers: a ten-year driving ban with extra points on licence which start after the ban, so insurance will hit hard, and a fine.

Hopefully knowing what sentence they could get would stop them doing it.

As for school children going over the gates or round them, there should be a minimum fine of £1,000 and they should be named and shamed.

Anything that can save lives can only be a good thing.

But whatever police decide, laws and consequences should be harsher.
