I AM writing to express disappointment at recent news that after the much needed refurbishment of York Art Gallery, access will no longer be free for public viewing.

As a public arts space in the heart of one of Yorkshire’s major cities I believe it should remain free for all.

Culturally York has an important part, even duty, to play in the arts and encouraging future generations to be inspired by it. With a large aspiring student and creative community, I am not alone in the belief that it is of great importance to continue free access during a time of austere cuts. Art should be socially inclusive.

Tourism is also a major part of the economy, as I know myself as a visitor to the city. Now living in York the long awaited re-opening has been marred by the possible implementation of a charge.

We can look toward many of London’s major galleries and more local ones such as YSP or The Hepworth. Where there is a will to keep them free to the public, they have found other ways of supplementing costs.

I hope that the present council (or future) and York Museums Trust can find a way forward to keep the gallery free for both York residents and visitors.

As Pablo Picasso said: “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
