PUBLICITY from the Labour Party states it wants to reopen Haxby station. I think that the Conservatives are also in favour. While I am a fan of rail travel, this proposal should be consigned to the bin. It would be an extremely expensive white elephant.

Firstly, railway stations need car parks. So where would the car park be?

Next, who would benefit? Obviously, people from the Haxby and Wigginton area who need to go to Malton, Scarborough or Teesside. Possibly people who live in the east of Haxby, who work near to York station. We are talking about spending huge sums to benefit a small population.

Now consider the No 1 bus route. It serves Wigginton, Haxby, New Earswick, Yearsley and on to the station. On its way, it takes pupils and staff to Joseph Rowntree School and the York St John University. It serves Nestlé, the hospital and the city centre, with stops at the Theatre Royal and the station. Then it goes on to Acomb and Chapelfields. From the station, the Coastliner serves Malton, Scarborough, etc and other operators serve places such as Driffield and Pockington, neither of which have rail links with York.

Stop this proposal. It is based on emotion, not common sense.
