HUGE congratulations must go to The York Musical Theatre Company for its performance of A Little Night Music at Joseph Rowntree Theatre last week.

This is not an easy musical to execute, presenting challenges for the actors with complex meters and pitch changes. In addition all of the music in the show is written in waltz time.

Paul Laidlaw as musical director is spot on with these demands. Set in Sweden around 1900, the stage positioning was perfect in its simplicity.

Having seen the original show in the 1970s with Jean Simmons as Desireé and again at the National with Dame Judi Dench in that key role, I can honestly say that this performance was up there amongst the best.
