CAN I highlight an accident sadly waiting to happen?

Outside the south side of the Minster the other day, I witnessed what was very nearly a young child caught up in the spokes of the front wheel of a cycle going far too fast in the “shared space”.

The young child was perhaps four or five years old and seemed to playfully run away from the parents, missing the cyclist by a narrow margin.

Many visitors to York don’t realise the area is also for use with cycles, and children will just see an open space. After all, what is there to point out otherwise?

Sometimes the signs intended to remind everyone about the shared use are either propped up against a wall or at best are at either end of the space, which doesn’t work if you are approaching out of Petergate and through Minster Gates.

Here’s a novel idea: why not ask cyclists to dismount the short section outside the south side of the Minster?

While walking with their cycle they could perhaps take in the beauty of this magnificent cathedral that brings so many visitors to York.

The income they bring helps to support the many varied shops and attractions we all take for granted at times.

Failing that, how about just slowing down?
