SINCE completion of the Poppleton Park&Ride site and associated “improvements” to the A59, there have been a number of worrying incidents involving the misuse, or misreading, of traffic lights at the staggered T-junction of the A59 with Station Road and Northfield Lane.

I was witness to this recently when driving along Station Road towards the junction, with the intention of turning right onto the A59 outbound.

A green right-filter arrow had been showing for some time as I approached, but on arrival I was amazed to see two large lorries flash by on the main road, heading west.

These were (ironically) highway maintenance trucks, large bulk carriers that would have made short work of my family saloon, had I arrived at the junction a few seconds earlier.

Although I can not give an explanation for this incident, it does appear to me that the presence of two sets of traffic lights within about 50 yards of one another is causing confusion and that perhaps motorists are missing the red light in front of them while focusing on the green light further ahead.

Whatever the reason, It is vital that the authorities look into this problem and resolve it before someone is killed.

Richard Carr, Station Road, Upper Poppleton.
