IT IS right to say that the Liberal Democrat budget amendment will focus on protecting frontline services (The Press, February 19).

The ruling Labour group has announced various cuts to services. Some of these they have outlined plainly, such as the cuts to community centres and highways maintenance – both of which we will oppose.

Other cuts are hidden in the so-called ‘rewiring’ and ‘transformation’ programmes. In ‘place-based services’ these include plans to charge residents for all green bin collections, to further cut street cleaning and litter bins, and to look at reducing the frequency of grey bin emptying.

We will also oppose these cuts and put more money into boosting recycling and to return winter green bin collections. This is the only way to tackle the fall in recycling rates we have seen under Labour and the ensuing rise in landfill tax. To put £3million more into services for residents requires choices.

Our choice is to cut the nice-to-have but not essential city-centre projects such as the £10million Media Hub, reduce senior management and move money from council coffers into frontline services. I hope that all councillors can back our proposals when they are debated next week.
