THE “expert view” of Professor Neil Carter (The Press, February 28) regarding the General Election falls wide of the mark.

His views superimpose the national political landscape onto York Central instead of taking into account any local nuances.

When he ventures that “it is hard to see the Liberal Democrats getting anywhere near the 11,694 votes they got last time”, he ignores the fact that when the Lib Dems have an incumbent MP or a well-known local candidate, then it polls far better than its national opinion poll rating.

My doorstep canvassing is bearing this out. With both the Labour and Conservative candidates coming from London with no history of York activism, people are looking to an established local candidate to represent their best interests.
