I THOUGHT the column by Julian Cole “Divided over Dresden” was excellent (The Press, February 26).

There has been much correspondence relating to Dresden and all responding to Mr Westmorland’s letter of February 20, which was written, as another letter writer put it, by someone who “did not do his homework”. I could not agree more.

As a point of interest, my wife and myself visited Dresden last year on a cultural visit and one lady guide said (in relation to what the residents call the ‘Great Fire’) that her grandmother said it was nothing to compare what we did [the Nazis] to the poor people in the death camps and Leningrad (now St Petersburg).

She went on to describe in detail how Leningrad was encircled and people starved in their hundreds every day – just a thought for Mr Westmorland to digest.
