YOUR correspondent of February 28 has a very one-sided view of trade unions.

This is surely as blinkered as saying all corporations and business leaders are entirely worthy.

There are no doubt praiseworthy characteristics and lamentable faults on both sides.

If it is considered wrong that unions can contribute to a particular political party, it is surely equally wrong for a business to contribute to a political party, where many people who have bought products from a company are not consulted about any donations.

Unions do a great deal of good, often against all the odds. Don’t forget those in the building trades who tried to bring lack of safety and appalling conditions to public attention.

Unionists were summarily sacked, imprisoned for years and blacklisted thereby preventing further employment.

So please let’s have some balanced criticism, not blinkered ranting.
