EVER had the feeling you have been here before? Just before Christmas residents of Pocklington got the distinct feeling of déjà vu when The Black Swan was renamed The White Goose.
Back in 2003 after a refurbishment the Black Swan was renamed the Mucky Duck a trite play on the nickname given to every Black Swan pub in the country. Thankfully, a few months later the swan name returned to Pocklington Market Place.
It’s a sad state of affairs when a name that has been on the premises for more than 150 years should be changed. The Black Swan sign has probably been on the building much longer than 150 years. Pub signs were originally used to identify hostelries as most of the populace were illiterate.
Pub names and signs may come and go, but the building at 30, Market Place, Pocklington will always be The Black Swan to me.
