STEPHEN LEWIS’S excellent feature on York’s traffic woes (The Press, February 26) highlights what needs to be done. We need cross-party cooperation because sadly Labour cannot be trusted.

Recently I had a council letter through my door regarding budget cuts survey. One was suggesting that we voted for or against a toilet charge. How cynical was that when this charge was already in the pipeline and now has been implemented.

I agree with Conservative leader Chris Steward that spending £135,000 on a congestion commission is expensive. The Green Party’s Andy D’Agorne also has a valid point in suggesting a free town or shuttle bus service to ease people from their climate-wrecking cars. Ann Reid (Lib Dems) wants a more sensible approach to costs with more direct business and resident involvement.

We must bite the bullet. York’s congestion is caused by an increased deluge of cars in the so-called rush hour. My proposal is to create a total one-way system where traffic comes in and as swiftly moves around the city walls and out the other side. Inside there is an inner sanctum: a traffic free zone apart from business access.

Another option would be to restrict cars by only allowing certain number plates on alternate days.

Bus lanes must be created which actually work for expedient travel. A free bus service would be the icing on the cake.
