THE York Report supplement of February 17 contained an item on the Terry’s Chocolate factory which referred to the developers’ public consultation about the future of the site last November.

The article included the information that the developers were intending to convert the clock tower to residential use by creating flats inside it.

Perhaps I might provide an update on the Living with History open meeting held by the York Environment Forum at the end of January, about the importance of the clock tower to the people of York.

People who came along to this were invited to say why the clock tower was special to them, and then to make suggestions about how the tower might be used in future to make the most of its special interest.

Suggestions included the creation of a viewing point at the top from which the heritage of Knavesmire and the racecourse, and of Terry’s factory itself would be explained.

There could be a restaurant and even sports facilities – such as Scuba diving in the factory water tank which sits (or used to) on the roof of the tower. We live in hope.
