I HAVE no objection to supermarkets selling milk below cost. But they should not be allowed to force the producer to bear the losses of their marketing ploy.
Farmers have to make a long-term financial commitment for their output. Dairy herds cannot be instantly boosted or reduced at the whim of a short-term marketing campaign.
The price farmers receive should be fixed long term to reflect their investment in production.
Conversely, who negotiated these appalling contracts on behalf of the farmers?
