FURTHER to all the reports of further housing being built in and around York, too many to list and then there’s the York Plan, I think it’s about time the planners and builders woke up and smelled the coffee.

They are building us into an abyss. There is news of some 20,000 new houses and if every one of them has one car, York’s roads and the infrastructure will not be able to cope as it cannot cope now.

We have seen in the past few weeks that York Hospital can’t cope, doctors and dentists have waiting lists, while schools are bursting at the seams. Who is going to buy all these houses? It won’t be York people because York is now a hospitality city and it does not pay wages for young people to save a deposit or pay a mortgage.

It also might be a good idea to get the system changed on student houses, because they do not generate anything to the council coffers but still get all the services.

As for the planners, the only thing they should be building is a sign on the ring road reading: “York full”.
