DRIVING home from York, I suddenly saw a cyclist. How, I don’t know. He was dressed all in black and there was not a light to be seen, not even a reflector.
I made to pass him near Huntington School when he put out his right hand. Naturally, I assumed he was turning into the school. But no, he carried on toward Huntington. When I did manage to pass, he was not even displaying a front light.
I assumed he was an avid cyclist from the way he was dressed (black Lycra, helmet and so on). Had I hit him, I would have been to blame, such is the law. Yet this was a stupid adult who obviously thought he was above the law.
I think it is time that cycle manufacturers were forced to fit lights to every cycle sold. After all, you wouldn’t buy a car and be asked if you want lights with that.
I see that York police are giving out free lights to those caught without them. Will I get the same privilege if caught with a car light out?
