THE General Election is only three months away and yet the York Labour Party has still not yet chosen a candidate for York Central Constituency.

The interest in this seat is intense. Seven Labour candidates recently presented their credentials to the wider membership. Little wonder there were so many applicants, given the fact that there is the seemingly glittering prize of a guaranteed future career in Westminster.

Safe parliamentary seats are an affront to democracy: a candidate with a rosette of a certain colour that, regardless of their suitability, assures them of victory.

If Labour in York thinks it is that simple, then I believe they have hugely underestimated and misunderstood York residents.

I am determined to show residents that representing York as an MP is not about the colour of the rosette but the quality of the individual candidate. York Central is far from the safe seat that Labour assumes it is.

Nick Love, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, York Central Constituency.
