I WAS highly amused to see the letter from June Tranmer (The Press, January 20) stating that “Jonathan Tyler of the Green party is the best choice” for the next MP for York. I would never have thought that a Green party candidate for Guildhall would have come to such a conclusion.

She goes on to state that “There is no party whip in the Green party, so he will vote on issues according to his conscience and what electors want him to do.”

There is no legal political party in the world that does not have a party whip or, for want of a more modern expression, a party means of discipline.

All organisations from the local working man’s club to the WRVS must have a legal constitution, known as rules.

During the recent defections of Labour councillors in York, both the Tory and Lib Dems made such a big cry about the Labour party being ruled by its Whips and strong party discipline, and then the York Tory party leader stated (The Press, January 2) that the only reason councillor Joe Watts was leaving (or kicked out?) of the Tories was because “He was voting against a group policy.”

Party political discipline can only be held to be correct by rules which are enforced by what is commonly known as ‘the Whips’.
