JULIE GUNNELL has my support as Labour’s candidate for York Central.

Having met the three candidates so far declared (Julie, Jo Coles, Rachael Maskell), I believe she has the best credentials to represent York.

Julie is a true local unassuming working-class candidate who having worked within the voluntary and community sector, has observed and understands the challenges that people within the city encounter.

It says something about Julie if one considers the charities she supported during her year as Lord Mayor. Firstly, IDAS, a York charity that provides support for those affected by domestic abuse.

Secondly, the Jack Raine Foundation whose core work focuses on supporting children through community sport and alternative learning, as well as combating child sexual exploitation.

Both choices reflect her desire to look out for the more vulnerable in society.

Julie has also been a trustee with York Citizens Bureau and Welfare Benefits Unit for some time.

Julie, however, also appreciates the need to link with the business community as her time as Lord Mayor and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services evidences.

I am confident if selected – and then elected – Julie will retain the best interests of all York’s residents uppermost in her mind.
