IN REPLY to Sue Nelson’s column of January 19 (“Recycling lark is one big con”), all of City of York Council’s recycling vehicles have three separate compartments to recycle plastic bottles/cans, paper/cardboard and glass, which mirror the household containers provided.

There have been occasions when crews have had to use different vehicles, therefore recycling has been mixed. But this is only ever for a short period of time when, for example, a vehicle may have broken down.

However, all recycling is then taken away and separated. Our recycling system has proven to work well and last year residents helped to recycle and compost 43.63 per cent of waste in York.
