LIKE many others, I was sad to see the end of Waterworld.

I took my family there on that final weekend and as always I was impressed with the number of teenagers there who were swimming and having fun.

When we go to one of the ‘flat’ pools, we rarely see any teenagers swimming. If we are trying to improve the health and fitness of the younger generation, why are we reducing our facilities? Flat pools are largely for lane swimming and young children learning to swim, but they are not fun.

City of York Council says its is replace like with like, they this is not so. Each new development and the facilities get worse. Edmund Wilson had a depth of 14 feet and was fun; there was even a diving board and a seating area by the pool. Energise is not as good; cleaner changing rooms, but the pool is not as good.

The Barbican, accessible to all in the centre of town, has been replaced by the university pool, not as accessible for most residents.

Perhaps the residents should pretend to be tourists and then the council might listen to them and maintain facilities rather than reduce the quality of what we have.
