TRACEY SIMPSON-LAING seems to think that discolouration of chutes and some corrosion in a harsh swimming pool environment is justification to destroy Waterworld after only 17 years (Letters, December 11).

It is not. It is a reason to implement proper repairs and maintenance under new management.

The councillor’s logic is like owning a Rolls Royce and sending it to the crusher when it needs a major service; then going out and buying a new replacement limousine.

This is an unnecessary premature write-off of a valuable asset with decades of useful life remaining.

But it is only taxpayers’ money, so there is no limit to what can be thrown away.
