WITH reference to The Press of November 18 and your lead letter (Merrett has done so much for the city), while Cllr Dave Merrett may have been involved in some way in the 1980s re footstreets, let us remember where the full credit should rightfully be accorded.

I firmly believe it should be with Lord Esher and his report in the 1960s, along with the late Cllr Albert Cowen, Labour chairman of the planning committee at that time who in the 1960s brought this about by putting his head above the parapet, as I recall.

Cllr Cowen has in the past been rightfully described as the architect of the footstreets in York.

Perhaps Cllr Merrett might like to acknowledge this through your letters page.
