WE have just visited friends who live in Dunnington. While there, I accompanied them and their grandchildren to Waterworld, the local leisure pool, where young children are able to get used to being in the water before they move on to the small pool for swimming lessons.

I was impressed with how many men were interacting with their children in such a fun way.

We have a similar pool about ten miles away, with waves and flumes and I remember how much our grandchildren loved it. I felt sad to hear that the council will be closing it in December.

I then heard that Yearsley 50-yard pool could be closed also and that the council are spending about £4 million on building a new 25-metre pool.

I have met many medal winning athletes over the years who have sung the praises of this pool because its length gives them more time to perfect their stroke before turning.

Both the discarded pools have advantages that will not be met with the new pool and I believe that the money could be better spent promoting these facilities.
