AS A frustrated resident of The Groves, I appeal to anyone of influence to act in regard to the street drinkers/junkies who are making life a misery.

I see them congregate daily around Aberford House, next to the Spar shop. This begins usually about 9am. Their begging (which I find intimidating) and loud use of bad language is not something I want my young child to witness. The litter left behind, including needles and tins, suggest they care for nobody but themselves and do not wish to be part of the community.

I am sure if tourists or students were affected by such behaviour that action would be taken. However, residents’ voices fall on deaf ears.

I have attended residents’ meetings where, if we were lucky, a Community Support Police Officer would turn up to placate us. Never an officer of rank with any power.

Last month, one day an ambulance appeared and removed one of the two unconscious bodies on the lawn outside said premises. This was around the same time that a police firearms unit turned up. Does someone have to die around here before action is taken?
