YORK was effectively cut off from much of the outside world on Sunday night. The Highways Agency closed the A64 into York for road resurfacing.

I travelled south on the A64 on Saturday and saw no advance warnings. Imagine my surprise on my return at midnight when I found it almost impossible to reach my home in Huntington after driving from London.

Illuminated signs on the A1 stated that the A64 was closed after the A659. Great if you knew where that was, but I did not. When I found out it was the road into Tadcaster, it was too late.

Diversions in the town were almost non-existent with the result that scores of vehicles ended up on the eastern exit to the A64, only to be turned back by workmen. Asked how one reached York, I was told follow the diversions. This was unhelpful as there appeared to be none.

I did find one pointing to Boston Spa which I followed only to find no more signs. After several miles I ended up back on the A1 where I decided to drive north to meet the A59. It was here that the diversions signs were in evidence.

Why did the Highways Agency not say the A59 was the only route into York from the west?
