IN the letters section recently, York’s newest author Phil Sheperdson, bemoaned the fact that his book, EarthZoo, featured many locations in York which had since disappeared.

His book, which had taken him 30 years to write, mentioned the “missing” church in King’s Square. So what a surprise to see a photograph of Christ Church in King’s in The Press of October 20.

This photograph, together with many others, brings happy memories to us older guys.

The one of Bleasedale’s manufacturing chemist in Colliergate was of particular interest to me. I went there in 1965 for an interview for a job. I didn’t get it, and went on to work for the Veterinary Drug Company in Lawrence Street.

This company had a strong trading connection with Bleasedale’s, and, in fact, here I am at 67 and still working with one of the old Bleasedale’s guys, Trevor Watson, at Malton.

Trevor told me recently his father helped to demolish Christ Church in King’s Square. What a small world.
