FOLLOWING recent council meetings, it seems that the ruling Labour group doesn’t care about the wellbeing of the community.

Labour’s refusal to back the Lib-Dem amendment to give a five-year commitment to Yearsley Pool’s future undermines Labour’s mantra “we have no plans for closure”.

If you don’t back a short-term commitment and provide any financial support, that’s closure by expediency.

Yearsley’s subsidy could be trimmed, no doubt, but not to zero, which is the Labour group’s unrealistic target.

Labour says it’s unfair to subsidise a large, public health facility that saves lives, promotes fitness and nurtures the talent of our children; yet says it is fair to subsidise private club spectator sports.

We don’t oppose a new stadium for football and rugby, but why should Yearsley Pool be entangled in the process and offered as a sacrifice to facilitate it?
