AS COUNCILLORS for Micklegate ward, we are pleased to welcome work commencing on pavement repairs at Bishopthorpe Road shops last weekend.

This work has been made possible by the local traders working with council officers and Cllr Fraser to ensure the shopping parade continues to be welcoming to those visiting the area for shopping, and to eat, drink and socialise.

A more comprehensive improvement scheme may be in the offing, should that be the wish of traders, through continued partnership working between themselves and the council.

The active participation of local traders is a credit to Bishy Road and to the city, culminating in its being shortlisted for the Great British High Street of the Year award, in the local parade category. The winner will be announced next month and readers can support Bishy Rd on Twitter using #GBHighSt.

Only last week Bishopthorpe Road Traders Association picked up the ‘Service with a smile’ award at the Press’s Community Pride Awards.

Bishy Road is a successful and vibrant shopping street, dubbed “the Notting Hill of the North” by a national newspaper last year, due to traders’ collective efforts to make it so. Long may this continue.

Councillors Sandy Fraser, Julie Gunnell and Dave Merrett, Micklegate ward, Millfield Road, York.
