HOSPITAL Fields Road is part of a cycle route linking Fulford and the university with the rest of the city. Cyclists are most of the traffic, but are completely exposed to motor traffic, including heavy lorries.
We at Get Cycling are, among other things, the UK’s only disability cycling assessment and try-out centre.
Our clients make their first tentative cycle journeys here with traffic thundering past. Some have physical disabilities, and many have learning difficulties.
We are also concerned about our able-bodied customers’ safety.
We actually moved here because it’s on a bike route. There are also two children’s nurseries on the road. It is amazing that a cycle lane was not installed in the first place.
You go from an off-road riverside path to an unprotected road with serious traffic, then back to idyllic off-road cycling across Walmgate Stray. It’s not a continuously happy experience.
The first step is for City of York Council to include the road in the 20mph roll-out. This is at consultation stage, and I ask readers to support this.
