LET’S just get some points cleared up.

Firstly, two years ago I planned to exit the Labour Party because of what was happening within the administration. I was convinced by two sitting councillors that I could better effect change from within, so I stayed.

Secondly, councillors Ken King, David Scott and myself were selected by the Labour Party to be panellists (suitable Labour councillors).

We all attended the Labour Clifton selection meeting, where branch members were given the chance to decide who they wanted to be their candidates at the election. The branch decided they wanted the other candidates. None of us have ever had any feedback as to why we weren’t selected.

On reflection, I am not and never have been a militant Labour activist. I believe there is right and wrong in all parties. I have become disillusioned with Labour nationally. My family are all Labour supporters in the North East, but politics has moved on.

The Labour Party was right to deselect me because I am not left-wing enough for them, but no one can challenge my commitment to working for my ward.

Thirdly, Cllr James Alexander sent me three or four emails and texts saying how much he valued me and that he wanted me to carry on as a Labour councillor. Guess the local branch didn’t agree with him.

Cllr Helen Douglas, Crombie Avenue, Clifton, York.
