ON Sunday afternoon my wife and I walked around the riverbank area of Hospital Fields meadow, photographing the area which the York Motor Yacht Club proposes to enclose for extra moorings.
York is very lucky to have beautiful wilder places close to the heart of the city, and this riverbank is part of that heritage.
In spring and summer there are wildflowers along the banks; the only infestation of Himalayan Balsam is right by the fence where the York Motor Yacht Club’s present moorings cut off public access.
How could our council allow any of this public riverbank to be cleared and fenced off for the private enjoyment of a privileged few?
For the larger view, we walked along the opposite bank to make a direct comparison with what we now enjoy, and what may be there if the planning application is allowed.
Which should we prefer? Is it just a matter of where the heart is?
