PAUL HEPWORTH states that it’s a myth that traffic lights are deliberately programmed to cause congestion (Letters, September 27). Surely if a system isn’t used to its full potential, indeed never been tried, this is by definition deliberate.

Vehicle numbers change throughout the day, so what is the point of having standard set timing on the lights? Our system is capable of varying timings according to information received from the pressure pads.

We have all waited at lights with no other vehicles in sight, and this rightly infuriates road users. If Paul can’t see what is happening, I will gladly drive him round York and guarantee to prove him wrong.
