CONTRARY to D McTernan’s view (Letters, September 26), a Green Party member of the Congestion Commission would not be “by definition against measures to help the motorist”.
As Fishergate ward councillor since 2003, I have spent more time on parking/ traffic issues than cyclists’ concerns. Greens secured continued parking outside Sainsbury’s and Fields Fayre local shops, now short stay to prevent commuter parking blocking use by passing trade.
We supported removal of a short bus lane which created hazards for motorists and cyclists turning in and out of Aldi/Iceland, Maple Grove and the Barracks. We worked with Maple Grove residents to secure Respark for their street, liaised with local businesses and have supported residents elsewhere when the majority didn’t want residents’ parking.
Parking at Broadway shops is now much improved and safer following my concerted efforts, working with local residents group BAGNARA and shopkeepers (despite this being private unadopted land).
As a member of a Congestion Commission, I would want us to look at models of how other places work, residents’ ideas for different traffic flows, better signal phasing, as well as attractive public transport walking and cycling arrangements. External experts would assist us to ‘think outside the box’ and ‘Get York Moving’.
Cllr Andy D’Agorne, Green Party, Fishergate ward, Broadway West, York.
