FOLLOWING The Press coverage of the Yorkshire in Bloom awards ceremony at the York Racecourse, I felt it timely to draw further attention to the many awards achieved locally and hope this may encourage more local participation from villages etc.

I find it rather sad and depressing at this moment in time to see the untidiness around village name signs with weeds, ivy and briars quite common.

Surely, there are in these communities, enough able bodied and public spirited persons with a little initiative and commitment to make these small areas more attractive.

Perhaps parish councils may consider taking this idea on board.

I have been involved for more than 20 years with Yorkshire in Bloom both as a judge and supporting an entrant.

I trust you may consider the above in your letters page as soon as possible while the idea is still fresh.
