AFTER reading The Press letters page on September 20 I have to agree with all the writers who say we don’t need a congestion commission.

The problem with York is traffic lights. If I drive in to York and park at the Castle car park, which is a trip of two and half miles, I have to drive through eleven sets of lights which averages one set every 400 yards.

A few years ago I used to visit Swindon and it was a pleasure to drive through as there was hardly a traffic light in sight. Even at peak times the traffic flowed just like it does in York when lights are not working. Drivers and cyclists were more careful and at the time of my visits (as I kept being reliably informed) the accident rate in Swindon was much lower than York.

The commission should go there and look at how they operate and then they will only be needed for a couple of days to work out the problem so they will only need a couple of days pay.
