SO WE’RE to have a “congestion commission” to alleviate our traffic problems (The Press, September 17).
This will be four councillors and five “external” experts. It is to be hoped the councillors aren’t members of the anti-car brigade or nothing will be achieved. Indeed, why is their presence required as they have not contributed to any solutions in the past?
We can only hope the “experts” will, apart from looking for a long-distance future utopian vision for York, address the immediate problem now, and make traffic flow a priority. For example, using our computerised traffic light system to the full, which has never been tried.
Successive councils have tried to slow down and deter traffic without offering a viable alternative. This must stop. The agenda must be to get the traffic moving now. It’s not just going to vanish.
D McTernan, Fossway, York.
