I COULD not believe City of York Council is to set up a “congestion commission” with members receiving £400 a day; and councillors (already paid) receiving further remuneration for attending this pointless talking shop.

There is no need for outside “experts” who lack knowledge of the city or understanding of the systematic strangulation, self-inflicted since the early 1970s.

More than 100 roads have been closed; barriers erected; traffic lights put upwhere they are not necessary and their sequences designed to inflict maximum delay and disruption at all times of the day and night.

We don’t need outside academics to tell us what is wrong with traffic policy in our city; neither do we need to waste £161,000.

We need local politicians with the vision and intelligence to realise that the answer is a scheme to get the traffic moving again by opening the 100 roads now closed.

Mr D Wardell, Malton Road, York.
