HAZEL WARD believes many years ago, “the amount you were allowed to borrow for your mortgage was calculated on the man’s wage although it was a joint mortgage - allowing for the fact the woman would have children and not be able to work”.
She went on to say this “kept house prices down” (Letters, August 19).
House prices have risen because demand has been outstripping supply, not because women have decided to go to work.
House prices can be tackled in two ways. One is to increase the supply of homes, the second is to increase wages. I think both are required.
I don’t think women giving up their jobs and staying at home to look after the family will make homes more affordable for the average hardworking family in York.
