AMONG my friends in the RAF in 1941-42 were a Jew, an Arab and an Armenian Christian.

They were proud of the shoulder flashes “Palestine” on their uniforms as that was their home country and where they had enlisted.

We lost touch in Canada when I was sent to a flying school in America and they, together with another friend from British Honduras, went to Canadian schools.

Because they were not white and European, they were not acceptable in the US at that time.
